Switched Combiners

 

Common applications of switched combiners are in wireless base stations where their function is to efficiently combine up to 4 high power amplifiers so that a particular transmit area can be optimized for coverage. They also provide the ability to switch in a redundant amplifier in the instance that a primary amplifier was to fail.

High Power for Telecom Base Stations

This unit incorporates a low loss, high power four-way switching  combiner and divider into a single package which offers isolation  between combiner and divider module of greater than 90 dB. The power divider has more than 30 dB isolation between outputs to minimize  amplitude and phase changes during switching from one to four  amplifiers. The combiner, capable of 150 watts/channel, can sum coherent  signals totaling 600 watts CW, with random peaks of 2000 watts and is  monitored by an optional internal -50 dB coupler.

The unique  feature is this units ability for power summation without  the loss  typically associated with standard power combiners. This is  achieved  with four 50 Ohm inputs connected to a compensated 50 Ohm  output. Each  of the four RF inputs can be separately controlled with  properly applied  DC voltage, while maintaining good output match.  Typical combiner loss  is < 0.3 dB with amplitude balance of < 0.3  dB and phase balance  < 4°. Operating frequency range is between 800  – 2200 MHz with a  bandwidth of +/- 2%.


High Power Compensated

This unit utilizes a combination of coaxial and our proprietary Airstrip™ technology which allow for high input power signals while exhibiting very low insertion loss. The high power combiner is capable of 250 watts per input and can sum up coherent signals totaling up to 1,000 watts CW, random peaks of 4,000 watts. The internal high power bi-directional 40dB coupler monitors total input power and also the reflected power of the antenna. This device is particularly unique because it allows power summation without the loss associated with standard power combiners and also because each of the four RF inputs can be controlled separately with proper applied dc voltage.

This particular design is centered around 882 MHz, however, frequency variations are available upon request. Typical insertion loss is 0.25dB   and output VSWR is 1.2:1 with all inputs activated. Typical amplitude balance is 0.15dB and phase balance is 3°. Package size is 11 x 3.75 x 2   inches. Input ports are TNC female, output is Type N female, monitor ports are SMA female and digital control is through a male, 9-pin D-subminiature. The unit is designed to operate over standard Telcordia environmental extremes.

The power combiner is capable of 180  watts per input and can sum up coherent signals totaling up to 360 watts  CW, random peaks of 2,500 watts. The internal high power bi-directional  50dB coupler monitors total input power and also the reflected power of  the antenna.

This particular design is centered around 882MHz,  however, frequency variations are available upon request. Typical  insertion loss is 1.0dB and output VSWR is 1.4:1 maximum. Typical  amplitude balance is 0.35dB and phase balance is +/-2°. Package size is  20.13 x 2.87 x 2.20 inches. Input ports are SMA female, outputs are Type  N female, monitor ports are SMA female, amplifier ports are BMA male  and digital control is through a male, 9-pin D-subminiature. The unit is  designed to operate over standard Telcordia environmental extremes.
